ProteinChip arrays contain eight spots marked A to H. These spots are defined by a hydrophobic barrier designed to confine small sample volumes of up to 5 µl to each spot. Spot placement on the arrays is designed such that the arrays accommodate most standard liquid-handling robots and multipipettors. ProteinChip arrays can accommodate larger sample volumes of up to 250 µl when used with the ProteinChip bioprocessor, which will be discussed in more detail later. The spots on ProteinChip arrays contain chromatographic surfaces. To avoid contamination of these surfaces, always handle ProteinChip arrays by their edges, never touching the spots.
