Staying awake is a problem for many American workers that work nontraditional hours.

Your body is driven by an internal clock which tells you when it’s time to be asleep and time to be awake. If this gets disrupted it may cause problems. When it’s light out, your body naturally wants to be awake and when it’s dark it wants to sleep. It’s hard to work against your body’s natural rhythms.

The most common symptom experienced by people with shift work disorder is excessive sleepiness, or the inability to consistently achieve and sustain the wakefulness and alertness necessary to accomplish normal tasks.

There are specific things that you should tell your doctor if you think you might have Shift Work Disorder. Tell your doctor about your work schedule and if you are tired or sleepy when you need to be awake.
